Adding a Family Publish Location

A family publish location is a location in the advanced integration project that is linked to some destination folder, used for making your Revit family files (RFA) available to others users. You can add as many family publish locations to the project as you need (for example, if you need to make family files available to users in multiple ProjectWise datasources). Once you create a family publish location and publish families to it, other users can create a family source location in their project that points to your family publish location, so that they can easily load and place your published families into their Revit models.

Create a Family Publish Location Linked to a Folder in a ProjectWise Datasource

  1. Right-click your project in the ProjectWise browser and select Add Family Location > ProjectWise.
Tip: You can also right-click your project and select Create Location, then in the Create Location dialog, set Role to Family Publish Location and click the ProjectWise button. When you select Add Family Location > ProjectWise to create the location, the Role is automatically set to Family Publish Location.
  2. In the Select the folder to link dialog, select a work area or folder (where the published family files will be stored) and click OK.
Note: The Select the folder to link dialog opens to the current datasource, which is the datasource that your project is stored in. If needed, you can select a folder from another datasource by selecting another datasource from the Folders list and logging in when prompted. Whichever datasource you use, you can either select an existing work area or folder, or you can right-click in the dialog to create a new work area or folder.
  3. In the Create Location dialog, click OK.

The family publish location is added under the project in the ProjectWise browser.

Note: If you want to assign an environment mapping (a Revit-to-ProjectWise attribute mapping definition) to this location, see Configuring Attribute Mapping.
Note: If you want to assign a name template (to control how newly published files are named) to this location, see Configuring a Name Template for a Location.

Create a Family Publish Location Linked to a Folder in ProjectWise Share

  1. Make sure this project is associated to a ProjectWise project. (see Associate a Project to a ProjectWise Project)
  2. Next, right-click your project in the ProjectWise browser and select Add Family Location > Share.
Tip: You can also right-click your project and select Create Location, then in the Create Location dialog, set Role to Family Publish Location and click the Share button. When you select Add Family Location > Share to create the location, the Role is automatically set to Family Publish Location.
  3. In the Select ProjectWise Share Folder dialog, expand the top folder (the name of the associated ProjectWise project), then select a subfolder (where the published family files will be stored) and click OK.
Note: In the Select ProjectWise Share Folder dialog, you can either select an existing folder, or you can right-click in the dialog to create a new folder. The only folder you cannot select is the top folder (which is the root of the ProjectWise Share portal of this ProjectWise project).
  4. In the Create Location dialog, click OK.

The family publish location is added under the project in the ProjectWise browser.

Create a Family Publish Location Linked to a Local or Network Folder

  1. Right-click your project in the ProjectWise browser and select Add Family Location > File System.
Tip: You can also right-click your project and select Create Location, then in the Create Location dialog, set Role to Family Publish Location and click the File System button. When you select Add Family Location > File System to create the location, the Role is automatically set to Family Publish Location.
  2. In the Browse For Folder dialog, select a local or network folder (where the published family files will be stored) and click OK.
  3. In the Create Location dialog, click OK.

The family publish location is added under the project in the ProjectWise browser.

Family Publish Location Settings

SettingDescription
Name Sets the display name for this location in the ProjectWise browser in Revit. The location name defaults to the name of the linked folder, but you can change the location name if needed.
Role Must be set to Family Publish Location for this type of location. Selecting Add Family Location (instead of Create Location) automatically sets the Role to Family Publish Location.
Bind to The Bind to menu shows which repository type is selected (ProjectWise, Share, or File System), and the Path field below it shows the path to the selected linked folder in that repository. For example:

ProjectWise datasource work area or folder path - pw:\\servername:datasourcename\Documents\Revit Family Publish Location

ProjectWise Share folder path - ProjectWise Share\Home\Revit Family Publish Location

Local or network folder path - C:\Revit Family Publish Location

Environment (ProjectWise only)

Shows the name of the environment that is assigned to the linked work area or folder. If it has no environment, this field displays <none>.

Populate the location with bound content When on (default), a link to each document that currently exists in (or later gets added or published to) the linked folder will be added under this location in the project. You will then be able to right-click the linked document and select Open Linked Location, which will take you to the document wherever it is (in ProjectWise Explorer, or in ProjectWise Share (browser), or in Windows Explorer).
